R3000 Features & Benefits
Main Benefits
1. Improves Productivity
- Manage end-user access to the Internet, eliminating time wasted on unauthorized Web site.
- Free up IT Management for mission critical projects, rather than constantly addressing issues at the firewall or proxy.
- Eliminate the risk of losing your Internet connection and any business functions that depend on that connection.
2. Reduces Liability
- Provide a tool for management to enforce their organization's Acceptable Use Policy.
- Avoid damaging and costly legal liabilities due to sexual harassment and hostile environment lawsuits over accessibility to inappropriate web sites.
3. Preserves Network Resources
- Conserve bandwidth by limiting access to broadband sites, including multimedia (MP3's, jpg's and Flash files)
- Avoid having to add any software to the firewall, proxy or cache by keeping these resources available for their core functions.
- Avoid latency and general network slow-down with "pass--by" filtering (R3000 never touches a packet).
What's New
Instant Messaging (IM) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Blocking
Blocks users from accessing/sharing media files, software, viruses, etc. using
unauthorized IM and P2P applications.
Real-Time Probes
Allows an administrator to monitor a user's Internet usage in real-time to determine
if that user is using the Internet appropriately. Reports generated by the probe can
be e-mailed for further review.
"X-Strikes" Blocking
Administrators can set criteria for blocking a user's access to "unacceptable"
Internet sites and lock-out a user's workstation from accessing the Internet after the
user makes a specified number of attempts to access such sites.
Customer Feedback Module (CFM Auto Learning)
This "auto learning" feature sends the most frequently visited non-categorized URLs
from participating customers back to 8e6 Technologies on a daily basis. The
selected URLs will be reviewed and added to 8e6's standard library categories.
Google Safe Search™ Enforcement
Can block access to inappropriate content within the Google search engine by
forcing the Google SafeSearch mode 'on' for all searches, including images.
SNMP
SNMP compliance allows network administrators to use Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) to monitor R3000s in their networks. SNMP can
monitor: traffic sent/received, CPU load, amount of free disk space, time since last
reboot, and memory use.
Main Features
Simply the fastest filtering available
8e6 designed its filtering servers to provide maximum throughput. That's why we are the filter of choice when it comes to the largest corporations and school districts. Many filtering technologies cause considerable network slowdown when they are doing their job of filtering Internet access. However, the R3000 is a network sever that is placed outside the flow of network traffic to "watch" rather than "stop and check" website requests. When used in "invisible" mode, it allows packets to move past freely, avoiding latency and eliminating the "filter" bottleneck". Never touching a packet means the R3000 won't terminate the organization's Internet connection in the event of a failure. Unlike competitive software offerings that my require several separate sever installations, the R3000 presents a robust and scalable filtering solution supporting over 30,000 users with a single server.
Works in any network configuration
8e6's Ethernet-compatible severs can be integrated in any network with virtually unlimited configuration options. The 8e6 R3000 operates by watching requests on Ethernet networks and easily adapts to any TCP networked to handle millions of user requests with no throughput degradation or connection interference. There is no need to reconfigure your browser or router, or modify existing network hardware infrastructure.
Unparalleled Performance & Scalability
Unlike competitive software offerings that require shared server functionality and possibly several separate server installations, the 8e6 R3000 achieves enterprise-strength filtering with its dedicated server appliance approach combined with “pass by” filtering technology. Designed to filter and filter only, the R3000 “watches” rather than “stops & checks” traffic as it goes by eliminating the need to touch packets unless necessary. The result is a robust and scalable filtering solution supporting over 30,000 users with a single server.
Easy to Install, Setup & Configure
8e6's Ethernet-compatible R3000 can be integrated into any network quickly, easily and reliably. The newly enhanced user interface provides intuitive navigation for simple and efficient setup resulting in an overall positive user experience.
IM and P2P Blocking with IFT
The explosion of IM and P2P in today's network environments has become a new security challenge with the advent of employees, students or virtually anyone now capable of easily downloading such applications for free and often without IT detection. As with monitoring and blocking Internet access, unmanaged IM and P2P sessions offer the same risks of productivity loss, legal liability, unnecessary bandwidth consumption and security leaks/threats. To combat these issues, 8e6 developed Intelligent Footprint Technology. Derived from 8e6’s Web filtering/blocking technology, IFT will offer an extension to the R3000’s existing instant messaging (IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P) functionality by greatly increasing management and control of these popular, yet potentially harmful applications. In addition to blocking access to instant messaging servers, IM services can now be blocked by the detection of actual IM packets that could be sent to unknown servers, private servers, or proxy servers, thus increasing the detection rate and decreasing the ability to bypass blocking. P2P packets can also be identified to block login or file transfer packets, depending on the P2P network being used, removing the ability to use the application.

Transparent User Authentication
The R3000 makes use of your existing directory based authentication and is designed to validate identities of users on the network based on their user profiles. Currently, Windows NT and Windows Active Directory server authentication methods are supported in invisible, router and firewall modes. With authentication enabled, the R3000 has the capacity to support up to 30,000 user connections at a 30-connections-per-second build rate.
Comprehensive Human-Verified URL/Category Library
Implementing high-speed artificial intelligence to collect web sites on a 24/7 basis, 8e6 employs Internet Analysts and Content Verifiers to individually verify and categorize each site. Utilizing this methodology since 1995 has allowed 8e6 to build a database of over 75 categories containing several million web sites from which the R3000 can filter.
Custom Profiling
Users have the ability to create unique and customized profiles based on 8e6's extensive library of 75+ content categories, augmented by an organization's additions or deletions. Individual sites can be passed or blocked simply by adding them in the "white list" or "black list" options. In addition, customizable block pages can be generated and tailored to your organization's needs making the R3000 a highly flexible solution.
Robust and Stable OS Platform
The 8e6 R3000 is based on Red Hat Linux — a stable, fast and resource efficient OS that provides an excellent base for higher through-put. It is a solid baseline for improved global support, industry standard technology advancements such as GigE and technological acceptance within our target user base.
Time-based Filtering
This function provides control over permitting or denying a user access to Internet resources during specified times. It saves on productivity and band-width during peak usage hours, while providing flexibility to allow user access to selected/permitted sites during breaks, lunches or after hours.
Failsafe Operation
Since the R3000 is a stand-alone server operating outside of your network's critical path, its operation does not affect overall network performance. Should the R3000 stop operating for any reason, your network is unaffected.
User/Group Profiles
Administrators have the option to select different profiles for different individuals or groups. Based on the selected profile, users/ groups are given“allowed,” “monitored” or “blocked” access.
Remote Administration
This feature allows setup and administrative screens to be accessed and managed remotely via a standard web browser. This permits management of the R3000 to be integrated into a network's existing control panels. One or more authorized individuals can remotely manage changes through a Web browser from any location.
Multi-level Administration
For easier management in multi-layer organizations, this feature allows administrators to assign IP ranges to multiple sub administrators, who can then login and manage their group remotely, providing the advantage of a centrally installed Internet filter. This is ideal for school districts and departmental organizations.
